Gianni Pennisi nasce come artista figurativo, autodidatta fin dagli anni ’70 si avvicina agli artisti della sua città che meglio incarnano i suoi ideali. Detesta il paesaggio, dipinge nature morte ma il suo vero interesse è rivolto allo studio del nudo femminile.
Nei primi anni 90, dopo un decennio di totale assenza dalla scena artistica diviene socio della locale “Società promotrice delle belle arti”, riprende la frequentazioni degli amici artisti e partecipa a concorsi di pittura a carattere regionale e nazionale. Nei primi anni 2000 frequenta i corsi estivi della scuola internazio-nale di arte e grafica di Venezia dove viene a contatto con un ambiente internazionale di grande stimolo, lo studio della figura lo affascina, approfondisce la conoscenza dell’anatomia e si esercita nel disegno dal vero con la modella.
Nello stesso anno si iscrive al corso di nudo presso l’Accademia Albertina di belle arti di Torino, per quattro anni segue le lezioni di nudo e nel contempo impara le tecniche della modellazione con argilla, la figura femminile esce dalla tela per diventare una entità reale dove il pennello è sostituito dalle mani dell’ar-tista, è un’esperienza nuova ed entusiasmante. Nelle aule dell’accademia Gianni avverte un’aria nuova lon-tana dai canoni tradizionali, lo colpiscono i dipinti di arte astratta dove spariscono le forme e i colori diventa-no i protagonisti della tela. Abbandona pian piano i canoni classici e rivolge il suo interesse all’arte astratta intesa come costruzione geometrica delle forme, il colore assume toni accesi e i suoi quadri assumono una nuova vitalità.
Biographical notes
Gianni Pennisi starts as a figurative artist, self-taught since the 1970s. In that period he enters in con-tact with local artists who best embody his ideals. He loathes the landscape, paints still life but his real inter-est is in the study of the female nude.
In the early 1990s, after a decade of total absence from the art scene, he becomes member of the local “Society of Fine Arts”, resumes visits to artist friends and takes part in regional and national painting competitions. In the early 2000s he attends summer courses at the International School of Art and Graphics in Venice where he connects with a highly stimulating international environment. The study of the figure fascinates him, he deepens his knowledge of anatomy and practices live drawing with a model.
In the same year he enrolls in the nude course at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin, he attends for four years the nude lessons and at the same time he learns the techniques of clay modeling. The female figure comes out of the canvas to become a real entity where the brush is replaced by the hands of the artist, it is a new and exciting experience. In the classrooms of the academy Gianni feels a new air far from the traditional canons, he is struck by the paintings of abstract art where forms and colors dis-appear, and become the protagonists of the canvas. He gradually abandons the classical canons and turns his interest to abstract art conceived as geometric construction of shapes, where colors take on bright tones and his paintings take on a new vitality.
